YMCA kids event for all!

Next Thursday from 11AM-12:30 the Dodge YMCA, on Atlantic between Court and Boerum Place, will be hosting an event geared towards kids 3 yrs old and younger. It's called the Little Lions Festival and it's a celebration of the Chinese New Year with Dragon-themed arts and crafts. They'll also have music, a photo booth, and serve a light breakfast. The "Rumble and Tumble" equipment will be set up too. That's an obstacle course that toddlers will love to climb on or under, jump on, roll around on (you know anything goes when you're a toddler). Basically, it sounds like a lot of fun for the kids and it's open to members and non-members. There is a suggested donation of $3 to benefit the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, a very worthy cause that makes sure kids can have a membership no matter what they can or can't afford.

Ethikus MeetUp

We're all about supporting our local businesses and this goes beyond Brooklyn, although we are a little biased since Brooklyn is the best borough by a long shot. Heh heh. We were really interested when we heard about a meet up for a company called Ethikus, which is "an online community that connects conscientious consumers in NYC with ethical and sustainable businesses in the area." They're "launching a city-wide initiative in May called Shop Your Values Week - a celebration of the stores and restaurants all over NYC that support community, employees and the environment." They have 2 meet ups a week to talk about the event and hear input and the next one is tomorrow. Although, sadly not in Brooklyn, if you're interested in what sounds like a very cool event you should go and find out more about it and help organize it. It's January 26 at Cucina di Pesce (87 East 4th) at 6:30pm.

Shake Shack Brooklyn-Style

So, most of you know that Shake Shack has been open for a little while now, since December 20th. We knew it was going to be in the Fulton Mall area but didn't know it was so close to Borough Hall, it's a Boerum Place and Fulton. We decided to swing by last week and check it out...and maybe get a shake, burger and fries while we were at it. We were so pleased to see some nice Brooklyn touches at this location. A couple of Brooklyn-centric mix-ins include Mast Bros. chocolate blend (which you can see in the picture above) and Early Bird granola (which we'll try next time!). We're so happy to have a Shake Shack in our hood and these local flavors make it all the sweeter (literally!). And the best part? The lines weren't nearly as long as their Manhattan locations so you can be sucking or spooning down a shake in no time!

MaryKate Maher at BRIC Rotunda Gallery!

Realty Collective's very own MaryKate Maher is not only involved in real estate but she's also a sculptor and will be having a show starting this week at BRIC Rotunda Gallery, which is right here in the neighborhood (Brooklyn Heights) so everyone should come out and see her work! New Restaurant at 268 Clinton

Restaurants at 268 Clinton have had bad runs. The last, Breuckelen, has been closed for a while now and before that was Cafe on Clinton. It's such a great little space on a very cute corner. Well, that cute space will soon have another restaurant to fill it, and hopefully break the unlucky streak. La Vara is a Spanish restaurant that, according to the owner "celebrates the Jewish and Moorish legacy in Spanish cooking". Owner/chefs also own a restaurant in Chelsea called Txikito. You can check out there menu here. It may hold a key to what you can expect in the new restaurant. We don't have any further info, except they have applied for a liquor license so expect a full bar and some very original menu options.

Bourgeois Pig Now Open!

We strolled by the Bourgeois Pig the other day, which has been open for several days now. It's decor is exactly how we pictured, although unfortunately they wouldn't let us take photos of the inside (outside is above) because they weren't quite set up yet. But if you've ever been to the Manhattan location you'll be able to visualize it. In fact the small bit you can see from the drapery in the windows might help too. Picture giant chandeliers, big decorative chairs, and lots and lots of red velvet. Definitely not the type of atmosphere for casual hanging. It creates a real date night mood. It's decor mirrors the rich food on the menu, indulgent. As we walked by the smell of bacon was pouring out onto the street. Maybe they were working on a bacon and cheese fondue? One can only hope.

Although there is no shortage of dry cleaners in the area, we were sad to see Suey Cleaners, at 249 Warren, go. They were very nice and inexpensive for Cobble Hill standards. Our first clue that they had closed was seeing a man with a shopping cart full of junk or treasure, depending on how you look at it, carting off with their sign. When we turned the corner we saw a new sign was up. "French, Spanish, Italian" it shouts. The new tenants are Idlewild books, which teach foreign language classes and sell books to help you learn. It will open up any day now so if you're interested you can register now or get more info here.

Judgment Day at Hope and Anchor

Today is Judgement Day at Hope and Anchor in Red Hook. That is, they're screening Terminator 2: Judgement Day at 7pm tonight. They'll be showing movies now and then, which is pretty awesome. There are plenty of movie screening in the neighborhood over the spring and summer, especially, but they are few and far between during the cold winter season. You can keep even warmer with the skynet shooters they'll be serving all night long for $5 a pop. So, if you want to get some grub, drinks and watch Arnold at his very best head down to 347 Van Brunt tonight.

Store Closing Sale in Red Hook.

Everbrite Mercantile Company, or as many may know the cute little store next to Hope and Anchor with the pac man-esque symbol above the window, is unfortunately closing it's Red Hook location. They are planning on getting a new space sometime in the future but as for now the website and web store will still be in full effect. They are having a "final days" sale this whole weekend, with the last day being Sunday January 15th. Head down and take advantage of the discounts while also helping them clear out their merchandise, such as furniture/displays and tools that will be on mark down.

Bonnie's Grill Wings!!

After blogging about Thai restaurant Pok Pok earlier this week and sharing info about their delicious wings with you, who could help but crave chicken wings? That's why we were thrilled when we came upon this discovery. Abilene, at 442 Court Street and the corner of 3rd Pl, is now serving Bonnie's Grill wings! Albeit different from the ones at Pok Pok these are buffalo style and really delicious. Bonnie's, which is on 5th Ave around 1st Street, isn't too far but definitely a trek. Now we don't have to trek. A large portion of wings will set you back 14 bucks and small only 9. They're available in mild, medium, hot and BBQ. Be wary, though, these wings run hot and the hot option is realllllllly spicy.

Closed on Court

We saw a couple of shops closed last Friday as we strolled down Court. 236 Court, which was a Deli and Grocery is now closed. Squashed between new restaurant Brucie and Sam's, a neighborhood staple, the grocery had been in that location for a while. Just beyond Sam's is another new restaurant Mooburger. Oh, how the neighborhood continues to change everyday.

The second shop we saw closed was Sweet Melissa's. No gasping yet. We were surprised when we saw the brown paper too (below) but you'll be happy to know that they were merely renovating last Friday and are now back open for business. It couldn't have been a lot of work that needed to be done since it was just Friday, so don't expect any major changes next time you visit.

Update on Pok Pok.

Back in October we were very excited to share with you that leases had been signed for a Thai restaurant, Pok Pok, to move into the space at 127 Columbia Street. Well, things are coming along and we wanted to share a little more info, including the photo above of the new signage. Originally a critically acclaimed restaurant that still exists in Portland, Oregon, Pok Pok's cuisine is mainly Northern Thai. It's a lot different from the other Thai restaurants in the neighborhood. They're especially known for their delicious ribs and wings. You can check out the menu from their Portland Restaurant here. Along with the new storefront there was a sign in the window basically telling the neighborhood who they are and that they are happy to be here. We're happy to have you!

Opera at Christ Church Cobble Hill

The Vertical Player Repertory is back. We haven't heard from them in a while but just noticed the other day while walking down Court Street that they'll be performing 2 shows, tomorrow the 10th and the 11th both at 7:30pm. Epiphany: The Complete Canticles of Benjamin Britten will be performed at Christ Church Cobble Hill, at 326 Clinton Street and the corner of Kane. If you haven't been in there before it's a beautiful space and will compliment the opera wonderfully. Tickets are $20 and you can get them at brownpapertickets.com or at the door. Let's Talk Soup

Here's a round-up of our favorite soups in the neighborhood. Of course there are plenty of great local soups not mentioned so please feel free to add your own favorites in our comment section! We can't try them all, you know, although we're shooting for it.

Squash Soup at Jake Walk- We first tasted this soup at the Smith Street Soup Festival a few months ago and were pleased to hear it was on their regular menu. Squash soup was a common one to see at the festival and Jakewalk's was far superior to their competitors. Comforting and delicious. You have to try it.

Hale and Hearty- They have a location downtown but even better is the fact that Uncle Louie G's on Smith Street sells it. It's a perfect quick and inexpensive dinner to pick up a cup and some crusty bread on the way home from work. Especially when it's below freezing and you need it just to thaw out.

Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese at Farmacy- It's delicious and classic. On a cold day nothing is better and it'll really take you back to being a kid.

Chicken Soup at Cobble Hill Coffee Shop- Okay so it's not fancy or unique but it's exactly what you want sometimes. Especially to help you fight that sinus cold you feel coming on.

Cool Undead Event at The Bell House

Next Friday the 13th, of course, there will be a dance with the theme of Undead 1989 Winter Formal going on at The Bell House. This Gowanus venue always has great events and this one sounds especially fun. A band called The Engagements will be playing 80's pop hits and formal retro dress-up is a must, add a little zombie make-up and that's a definite plus. It's $12 in advance and $15 at the door, which opens at 9pm. Tickets include one drink. We'll see you there!

Book Court hosts some pretty cool events. You wouldn't think it because it's such a small indie store but they get some pretty big names to come in for signings and readings. Tomorrow January 5th, they'll have Annie Leibovitz come in for her new book, Pilgrimage, which is not your usual Leibovitz photo book. Within the pages you won't find one human being but exquisite pictures of scenes and objects. The signing at the book shop, located at 163 Court Street between Dean and Pacific, will begin at 7pm. We'd get there early in case of lines.

Buschenschank Brooklyn

This recently opened restaurant seems to be doing well. We haven't yet stepped inside but have seen people going in and out of the joint. We last reported that this would be more of a tavern serving German and Italian snacks. While it may still have a tavern feel to it, as you can see in the picture above their are lots of windows but they're all frosted so you can't see in or out and the entrance is a little cave-like, they do serve more than just snacks. They have a pretty hearty menu actually, with steaks, burgers, roasted chicken and pizzas as some of the main entrees. They do have sausages, fondues, and an array of other little tidbits to snack on while enjoying a pint of German beer, as promised, but there's more as well. Has anyone tried this place yet? We really want to stop by. Any input would be great!

Brooklyn Strategist Coming Soon

Peek-A-Boo Kids, the children's shoe store that used to be located at 333 Court Street, has moved. They had a sign outside advertising a big clearance sale that went on most of last month. If you bought one pair of shoes you got another for free. This was all because they'd be leaving soon. Taking it's place? The Brooklyn Strategist, which hasn't quite moved in yet but has signs in the window introducing themselves. They are a gaming and social center and cafe. Not just for kids but they will have certain programs available for the younger set. We checked out their website and here's their mission statement of sorts below.

At The Brooklyn Strategist, we love games! Our unique atmosphere is a great place to enjoy strategy, community and competition through interactive board- and card-games. It is a place to play, learn, think creatively, socialize and strategize against an opponent or with team members. New Years Eve Places to Be.

There are a lot of wonderful bars, restaurants, and venues in our neighborhood where one can celebrate New Years Eve without the hassle of fighting the crowds in Manhattan. We're sure all the delicious restaurants, such as Prime Meats, Good Fork, and Char 4 will be doing something special. The question is whether or not they are booked yet. If you haven't tried already, don't wait any longer, make some phone calls now. Seersucker is doing a six-course southern feast for $120. The Grocery is also doing a special tasting menu for the evening. Clover Club is always a favorite. They'll have a four hour open bar from 9pm -1am, passed Hors d’oeuvres, Champagne Toast and the usual festivities for $100 per person. If a venue is more your style, $45 tickets are still available for New Years Eve Soul at The Bell House featuring Lee Fields & The Expressions and Sugar Pie Desanto. Wherever your night takes you, have a happy new year!

Bennington Writers at The Invisible Dog

We passed this flyer the other day about an event happening at The Invisible Dog (51 Bergen Street near Smith) on January 17th from 7:30-9:30 pm. They call it a "Literary Feast" and it features essayist Phillip Lopate as well Fiction, Non-Fiction and Poetry by MFA Grads Willa Carroll, Ken Harvey, Jennifer Acker, V. Hansmann, Lisa Alexander, Anne Decker, Julia Lichtblau, Alex Dawson, and Liz Arnold. There will be wine and book sales. If your New Years Eve resolution is to get involved more in the literary world than this is your event. Events at this venue are always great and usually pull in a crowd. We didn't notice any RSVP notice on the flyer but it wouldn't hurt to contact them to see about that. Check out their website if you're interested.

An uber hip eyewear shop is coming to the neighborhood. 159 Court Street to be specific. The company, Moscot, has been around for almost 100 years and specializes in vintage eyewear, particularly the 1930's-1970's eras. They have two stores in Manhattan, one on Orchard Street and one on West 14th. The new place on Court looks like it might be opening pretty soon. Although we can't see inside because of the brown paper covering the windows, the sign is up and ready. You can check out and even shop on their website here. Their eyewear looks pretty cool. Simple but stylish. Although we're always sad to see an old business go, 159 Court used to be a Floral and Photo shop, we think this new business is going to be a great addition to the neighborhood. 3 things to do before the weekend.

We've got a few suggestions to prepare for the busy Christmas weekend. Aside from the usual preparations, like cleaning and shopping, we have few things to add to your list for today.

Pamper yourself- Go get a last minute facial, manicure, shave, or massage. Persons of Interest on Smith street is a good place for men and Dashing Diva gives great manis and pedis.

Get in the Spirit- Get a zipcar (they have several locations in the area) and go visit the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights. This Brooklyn neighborhood is filled with residents who compete with their neighbors to have to most extravagant light displays and the public reaps the benefits. It's sure to fill you with all the warm and fuzzy feelings to get you ready for the weekend.

Take a minute to warm up- While doing your last minute shopping in the neighborhood, stocking stuffers, gifts, or food for your feast, sit down and have yourself a hot chocolate break. The Chocolate room has, hands down the best in the hood. Thick dark chocolatey and not too sweet. Add a home made marshmallow and you're ready for Christmas!

Rock' Cool

While we're on the subject of very unique classes for children (yesterday's blog was about interesting art classes, such as fantasy art and abstract, at Muriel Guepin Gallery) we thought we'd let you know about another school we heard of in the area. This school, or rather scool, is called Rock's Cool. We're assuming this is a play on words to say rock school. We don't have too much information because the website doesn't seem to be up yet but you can get more info by emailing mingo.tull@gmail.com or calling 718-596-4962. The classes are at 177 Smith Street, which is that new music store that specializes in piano repairs and restoration. They offer private classes as well as ensemble and teach all the instruments you'd need to form an awesome rock band, such as guitar, bass, drums, horns. They also have voice lessons. So, if this interests you, call email, or pop into the music store to find out about enrollment.

Children's Art Classes

We were very excited to learn that Muriel Guepin Gallery has art classes for children. We love this gallery and after picking up a brochure and browsing it we found that the classes they are offering are just as unique as the gallery itself. These sessions, which include learning different ways to create animals in their animal kingdom class, fantasy art, animation, and a class called "having fun with abstraction" are specialized for certain ages groups. In all, they have classes for 2 year olds to teens. Winter session starts on Jan 9th so enrollment is going on now. You can check out their website here for more classes and info on enrollment.

Old Time Jams at Farmacy

No, we aren't talking about homemade fruit jams, although they have that at Farmacy (513 Henry Street) also and they are delicious. We're talking about you bringing your acoustic guitar, or fiddle or washboard, and hitting some jams with some folks at this old-time jam session. They started back up in November and happen every other Tuesday between 7:30 and 9:30pm. You missed the last one last week which makes the next one December 27th. It's a pretty laid back atmosphere over at Farmacy so you can just show up and play, there's no cover. You can RSVP to alanfriend_music@mindspring.com if you wish. The only thing they ask is that you bring acoustic only. They had no amps in the olden days.

Pub Quiz

With all the eating we've been doing and will continue to do this season, exercise is a good idea. But what about exercising our brains? If you feel like you need to wake your mind up after all that monotonous shopping while listening to "Jingle Bell Rock" for the hundredth time, then head down to Last Exit Bar tonight for their trivia night. With 50 questions, this one is like boot camp for your brain. Plus they have some quirky categories. According to Brooklyn Exposed, you may get categories like " “Last Exit Theater” (hosts perform scenes from movies) “Canadian or Not Canadian?” (decide if celebs like Michael Cera hail from our friend to the north), & Bodega Price is Right (does toilet paper really cost that much?)". Sounds fun right? Well, if you want to go but can't go tonight then you have every 1st and 3rd Monday to make it over there. Last Exit is located at 136 Atlantic and trivia starts at 9pm. $5 bucks to play.

For those of you who have procrastinated a bit or just haven't been able to find that perfect gift, you are in luck. This weekend, December 17th and 18th between 12 and 6pm, do your last minute shopping at the Brooklyn Craft Central Holiday Market. With 65 designers total, although they will have different vendors each day, you'll be sure to find unique gifts for everyone on your list or even a little something for yourself. Littlefield at 633 Degraw Street in Gowanus will be hosting and it's sure to get crowded, especially since there is no cover, so we'd recommend going early. To quench your thirst or appetite mid-way through all this shopping, or in our case usually as soon as we start, they'll have plenty of drink specials and food truck will be hanging outside as well. So come out, both days if you don't check off all those names the first time around, and support Brooklyn's local artisans!

Potter Fans Party!

Saw this little tidbit on GeekChicNYC this week. On December 17th our favorite spot in Gowanus, The Bell House, will be hosting a Harry Potter Yule Ball. That's right. Harry Potter fans can celebrate the holidays in wizardly style. Nice attire is recommended...wizard robes are optional. It's a whopping 18 bucks to get in but along with all the music you'll be enjoying for those bucks, including Harry and the Potters (photo above) as well as Draco and the Malfoys, there will also be drink specials. Many moons ago, almost a year to be exact, we wrote a blog about a dentist moving to 158 Court street (pictured above). Well, a spring, summer and fall season later it has finally arrived. We walked by recently and noticed the place was set up for business and informative pamphlets were placed outside to introduce Steve Wong, DDS PC. Apparently, although he is new to Court Street, he is not new to the neighborhood as he's practiced at 316 Henry Street for 8 years previous. All in all he's been a practicing dentist for 14 year, 10 of which were spent as an instructor at NYU College of Dentistry. In the pamphlet Wong promises thoroughness with complete oral examinations (including cancer screenings) and short wait times, saying "you'll rarely have to wait more than 5 to 10 minutes". That sounds like good criteria to us. If you need a dentist, check him out 718-625-2828.

We've blogged about the puppet theater at 196 Columbia Street before but here's a show At the Clock Works that incorporates every holiday of the season in one spectacular marionette performance. It's called A Christmas Carol, Oy Hanukkah, Merry Kwanzaa, Happy Ramadan and it's being staged by The Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theatre. Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for children and you can find them on smarttix.com. They say the event is suitable for ages 5-105. Sorry 106 year olds, you didn't make the cut. T.A. progress in 2011

We just received an email from T.A., or Transportation Alternatives, which as Wikipedia may put it best is a "non-profit organization in New York City which seeks to change New York City's transportation priorities to encourage and increase non-polluting, quiet, city-friendly travel and decrease private car use". There is a campaign now that promises to match all donations given from now until the end of this year. They also gave us a round-up of everything they have accomplished in 2011. We thought we'd share it with you (below) since it was a great way to highlight some improvements in Brooklyn over the last year that will bring more inspiration for the new year. In the courts and in the streets, the Prospect Park West protected bike lane was challenged by an on-slaught of well-funded NIMBYs -- and we won!
New bike lanes and pedestrian safety improvements in Cobble Hill, Prospect Heights and at Grand Army Plaza.
Pedestrian plazas -- in Clinton Hill, Fulton Ferry and East New York -- transformed streets into social space.

The Heights Players will be performing a holiday treat for children and adults alike on December 10th and 17th. Wenceslas, written by Lindsay Price and directed by Ted Thompson, is a tale about the true meaning of Christmas. Check out more details in the synopsis below. There are two showtimes per day, one at 11AM and one at 1PM, and admission tickets are only $6. The Heights Players is an all volunteer not-for-profit organization and their theater is located at 26 Willow Place in Brooklyn Heights.

Christmas is all about getting … isn’t it? If that is so, then what could Christmas bring someone who has everything? Why Would A King Need Christmas? Pet Smart on Atlantic

We walked by the new PetSmart at 238 Atlantic the other day. The place is really huge and was very busy when we passed by. It's good to see a bustling business on this corner as the building had been under development for quite some time. The official opening was on November 7th and none other than Brooklyn Borough President, Marty Markowitz, was there to cut the ribbon. The store at this location is more than just a store. They also have a pet hospital and have pet grooming, training and adoption facilities. On top of pet food and other needs you can purchase s pet there as well. Fish, birds, hamsters, and reptiles to name a few. As we know from other PetSmarts you can take your pet into the store with you as long as they are leashed. So that they can pick out there own dinner, of course. But call to make sure (718) 852-2519. Hours are from 9am-9pm.

"Layer Current" Exhibit

Like the Spice Gallery will be presenting "Layer Current" starting tomorrow as part of Curate NYC and everyone should head over to Williamsburg to check it out. For those of you who haven't heard of Curate NYC it is a juried exhibition that sorts through more than 1500 visual artists living in New York and selects only a talented hand full to show off their work, thus giving them exposure which creates opportunity. It's a pretty big deal. The show is from December 8th- 18th and the gallery is located at 224 Roebling Street. The opening tomorrow is from 6-9pm. A complete list of the featured artists is below.

Lars Pasta on Smith Street

Does anyone know anything about this new addition to Atomic Wings called Lars Pasta To go? At 134 Smith Street, Atomic wings has some new signage. As you can see from the photo above it covers half of the original sign so it must be a big part of the business now and not just an addition to the menu. It's a whole different company attached, in fact. We looked them up online and couldn't find much, just that they were incorporated this past September. It does seem like a strange combo wings and pasta, especially pasta that being advertised as "healthy". Mac-n-cheese and wings is understandable. I guess it's like a Pizza Hut/Taco Bell combo. We'll wait and see how it does. If anyone has heard any more news about this place or tried it let us know. We're curious.

Holiday Party in Red Hook

The non-profit community of Red Hook, which includes Falconworks Artists Group, Dance Theatre Etcetera, PortSide New York, The Waterfront Museum, and Red Hook Rise, are all coming together to host one wonderful holiday event. On December 9th between 5 and 8pm join the party and enjoy food, drinks and special performances at Dance Theatre Etcetera (480 Van Brunt St Suite 203, above the Fairway). Hmmm Thai

So wandering around the neighborhood we noticed this new sign (above) at 278 Smith Street and thought "really, another Thai restaurant?". I mean seriously, do we need another Thai restaurant in the hood? After doing a little research we realized that it's actually the location of Em' Thai and according to menupages have only changed their name to Vip @ Thai. Now, we do support our local businesses and want them very badly to succeed. Does the name change suggest they weren't doing so well? Not sure about the new name though. Although Em' Thai wasn't a great name, Vip @ Thai just seems a little confused. What's up with the special characters? Whatever the name, though, the place gets good reviews and we hear they have really good happy hour specials. Plus the new sign is very cute, much better than the old awning that was just burgundy with a bright yellow E and M'. Let us know if you've been to the new and improved spot!

Story Time at Sweet Melissa's

A restaurant/bakery seems like an unlikely place for a story time but also sounds like a good idea. Today at 3pm (and every Thursday in case this is too short notice) is story time with Anne at Sweet Melissa's on Court Street. It's not only a good idea for them to get customers into the shop but also sounds really nice for the patrons to sit down with tea and cake and listen to some storytelling. The best part is they encourage you to bring your own books so it's a story time that takes requests. They also mention that you can and should bring toys so it's just like a playgroup as well. For moms, dads, and caregivers looking for daytime activities that will get you out of the cold, this is perfect. It's right when school gets out so it might be a madhouse. Santa Meeting

Let the holiday events begin. We've already talked about a tree lighting ceremony and winter festival now here's an interesting event we heard about that's going on this weekend as well. A pancake breakfast with Santa? I'd say if I were a kid that would sound like just about the coolest thing ever. For $10 per person or $30 per family head down to the First Presbyterian Church at 124 Henry Street in Brooklyn Heights for either the first seating at 9:30am or second at 10:30am. Eat pancakes, make crafts and get your picture with Santa. This sounds like a much better option than going to a mall and waiting in line after shopping all day. More relaxing and definitely more delicious. In case you can't see the photo we posted it says that seats are limited so here's the number to call to reserve a spot, 718-624-3770. Ask you're kids if they want to have breakfast with Santa this weekend. They'll probably say yes, unless they are terrified of the jolly bearded fellow like I used to be...then you may want to just wave to him from afar at the tree lighting ceremony on Friday instead.

Winter Festival

It's getting colder towards the end of this week and will be gin to feel a little more wintery. Let's celebrate by eating lots, drinking lots, and dancing! Only for the sake of keeping warm, of course. The most important part to keep warm and cozy is your heart (please excuse the cheese factor). You can keep warm, inside and out, by giving to this charitable cause. The Gowanus Canal Conservancy will be hosting a winter festival on Saturday, December 3rd at 69 9th Street (between 2nd ave and the canal). From 6:30-midnight indulge in a three-course meal, drinks, and live music, and all for a good cause! Tickets for the event and a conservancy membership are $60, event only $40, and concert only (which begins at 9pm) are $15. If you're already a member you can buy up to 10 tickets for a discount of $30 each. Let's help clean up the Gowanus Canal and have fun while doing it!

Christmas Tree Lighting

As we all know, one holiday ends and preparations for another one begin. This is especially so with Christmas. We see it as we enter the stores around the neighborhood and see Christmas decorations being sold and hear "Jingle Bell Rock" pumping out of the speakers. It's time to get in the spirit and you can start by going to a tree lighting ceremony at Carroll Park this Friday, December 2nd (rain date Dec 9th). The festivities begin at 6pm and will include singing carols and, of course lighting the tree. Also, Santa and his elves will be there and their will be free refreshments a gifts for the children. For anyone who's been to this annual event, you know that the kids really love it and it's good times for all. The forecast is looking good as well so it should be a beautiful night for a tree lighting!

Okay, we're all stuffed from gorging ourselves turkey dinner yesterday and leftovers today. It's Black Friday and time to shop it off right? We say wait until tomorrow! Small Business Saturday. Rest off that meal today and get ready to support our local small businesses tomorrow. We know you don't need more incentive to shop at the awesome boutiques and shops in the hood but here is some anyways. Amex has a promotion going on for tomorrow only. Spend $25 or more at any independently owned business and they will credit you $25 on your account, which you should receive at some point next week. Sadie's Kitchen Once More.

Okay, I know we've written a couple of blogs about this new restaurant already but we've finally gotten a chance to visit and taste and the verdict is a delicious one. We like to keep you updated so hear it is. Yes, the menu is mostly mac-n-cheese but the variety is incredible. From shitaki mac with brie and truffle bread crumbs to buttered lobster mac with fontina and herb bread crumbs to kielbasa and gorgonzola mac with brussel sprouts. Everything sounds unique and extremely mouth-watering. It doesn't disappoint either. They do have a handful of equally unique biscuit sandwiches if the former isn't up your alley. Fried catfish, jalapeno jack, slaw and pickled okra tartar is one. Another is made with bbq duck, spicy plum sauce, arugula and brinjal chutney. Anyways, we can list off the whole menu but you can just pick one up for yourself. We're making ourselves too hungry with all these descriptions anyways. They started delivery service at the beginning of the week so if need to change things up with your delivery repatoire this is a good option. Mac keeps well when traveling. Oh, we almost forgot the pies! Shoo fly, pumpkin spice, and more for $20 each. You may still be able to order one or two for tomorrow. Check them out.

We wanted to let you guys in a a couple of internet (a la groupon) deals going on in the neighborhood. We can we say. We like to pass on the savings.

Amazon local is offering a $25 credit for only $10 for Verde restaurant on Smith Street. That's 60% off. If you've never been to this Italian restaurant then buying this coupon would be a great way to check them out for the first time. Make sure you read the rules before buying. They are the usual "dine-in only" and "only one per customer" type stuff. Also, you only have until the end of today to secure this deal so get on it.

One of our favorites has a deal going on with NYC Downtown through Google offers. Buy an meal worth $50 at Alma for $25 on this site. You can spend it on food and drinks, and use it between November 24th and May 21st. Again you only have a short time (about 2 days) to buy this deal so check it out if you're interested.

Top Five for Thanksgiving Shopping

We've put together a list of the top five (in our humble opinion) places to buy food for the Thanksgiving holiday. Whether you're cooking the whole meal or need to bring some nice snacks to someones home who you're celebrating with here's where you can go.

Stinky Bklyn- Since they're expansion they have twice as much room to house twice as many delicious cheeses, meats, and other gourmet treats. They also have free-range antibiotic and hormone-free turkeys ranging in weight from 12-24 pounds from Stonewood & Misty Knoll Farms in Vermont. Call to see if they have any Turkeys available (they go quick). This is the perfect place to pick up an appetizer for a party.

Fairway- Of course this is on our list. They pretty much have everything you may need. May be crowded and hectic but you'll find what you're looking for.

Court Street Grocers- They had Turkeys but the deadline has passed. Who knows though give them a call. Also though, like Stinky they have a lot of delicious treats to bring if you're attending as a guest...including pies!!!!

Sadie's Kitchen- Although we have yet to check this place out we've been hearing good things. They are on our list for one reason alone...well a few. Pies, pies, pies! They have pecan, sweet potato and other southern and Thanksgiving-friendly pies. Call ahead to see if you can order one or two or several!

American Beer Distributing and Thrifty Beverage Center at 256 Court Street- Now there are so many wonderful wine stores we could have included but decided that this place might be the best for this occasion. They have wine and beer (and a giant selection) but they also have a huge selection of soft drinks in case you have kids or non-drinkers attending that might like something special to drink for the holiday.

Well, there it is. Now get out there and shop away!

Caselnova, Now serving Brunch!

Our favorite neighborhood Trattoria, Caselnova, has just started serving brunch. The first day they opened for brunch was last Sunday. Along with some traditionals, like Eggs Benedict, they have an Italian twist on breakfast by serving things such as breakfast pizzas and Italian (instead of French) toast. All of this comes with a complimentary cocktail. Being right near our Columbia Waterfront office, the restaurant is at 215 Columbia, we order from there all the time and can vouch for the tasty food (especially the pizza, which you can see in a small photo below). They're playing Monday night football, as well, and they also have weekly specials, such as 1/2 price bottles of wine on Wednesdays. Last we looked kids ate free on Tuesdays and Mondays were 2 for 1 pizza nights. Check in with them on that as it may have changed. You can follow them here on facebook for more daily specials. So, if you haven't checked this place out yet you should. And definitely keep them on your brunch list.

Sadie's Kitchen now open!

Blogs across the web are and have been a buzz about the opening of this new restaurant, Sadie's Kitchen at 243 Degraw, which was scheduled to open Monday! Between reading through all the other blogs and articles, including a sweet spread they got last week in the NY Times Diner's Journal, and walking by and peeking in the windows ourselves, here's what we've found out. Like we suspected from the name and decor, it's a southern comfort food menu. Mac and Cheese is a big item on the menu and they'll serve it plain or dressed up with other ingredients. Biscuit sandwiches will also be on the menu, which seems to be very affordable ($7 for the plain mac and $8 for the sandwiches), and, of course pies pies and more pies!!! Since the space is so small they plan on doing more take-out business than anything else, but the inside is so inviting with a 30's retro diner look that I can't imagine people won't want to go in and soak up that atmosphere. If you've tried it already we'd love to hear a review! We're definitely going to try it soon ourselves. We're ready to be comforted!

New Music Store

A piano music store just opened up at 177 Smith Street. For anyone in the neighborhood who owns a piano or has just glanced in a window and caught sight of a beautiful grand piano while strolling through Cobble Hill, you know that a store that sells and refurbishes pianos should do pretty well in this area. Big Wrench Piano Care will hopefully thrive. If you walk by and look in the window of this new music store you'll see pianos of all shapes and sizes. It's Registered Piano Technician, or RPT, is a Brian Whiton. He's got a pretty good resume from the looks of the website. He "commenced the study of the art and trade of piano tuning and repair in Minnesota at the Steinway and Sons retail giant Schmitt Music. Since moving to Brooklyn in 2001, he has worked with several of the finest piano rebuilders and tuners in New York City.

But mainly he has a passion for what he does. "Like all successful tuner-technicians, I have a deep love for the instrument," Brian quotes. "I realize I'm fortunate to make a living in an interesting and challenging field." So if you're in the market for buying, need a tune up or repair, this place is for you.

Book Release Party

Ok all you Red Hookers..um Red Hookians? Whatever the correct term is. It's time to show your Red Hook pride by coming out this Thursday, November 17th at 7pm for a book release party of "Here in Red Hook". It's a photography book by Andy Vernon-Jones about the things that make Red Hook. According to the bio,"the book is composed of photos taken in the streets, alleys and abandoned lots of the Brooklyn neighborhood of Red Hook and combine a documentary approach with an art-photography sensibility. The photos express the beauty and struggle of life in Red Hook. Many of the portraits are of young people who are at the cusp of adulthood; their gazes show their toughness and their hope for the future. " The party will be held at the Lucky Gallery, 360 Van Brunt Street (between Sulivan and Wolcott) and there will be food and drinks from local establishments. Baked, Breuckelen Distilling, The Brooklyn Ice House, Esser Vineyards, The Good Fork, Kevins, Sixpoint Brewery, and Steve's Key Lime Pies will all be providing refreshments. With a list like that how could you not come hang? See you there!

Red Hook DOT meeting

A lot is being talked about for improving transportation and walking paths for getting in and out of Red Hook and you should be part of the discussion if it affects you. On November 17th there will be a CB6 Transportation Committee meeting at 6:30pm at a location TBD – check for updates at www.brooklyncb6.org/calendar/. Among topics discussed will be enhancing the pedestrian environment (details below) and the B61 bus. Here are some of the proposals:

An enhanced crossing at Clinton Street, improvements to the W 9th Street median under the Gowanus Expressway, and a new signalized pedestrian crossing at Mill Street will make access on foot to the subway system easier and safer for Red Hook residents. In addition we have completed a study of a proposed new intersection at Mill Street/Garnet Street and Hamilton Avenue and determined that there would be local bus travel times savings of 25-50% and no major negative traffic impacts. We believe this project will not only improve transit but also help to knit together the neighborhood’s pedestrian, bicycle, and automobile transportation network.

Pedagogy Musical

Falconworks Artists Group will be performing a special work-in-progress presentation of Pedagogy of the Oppressed - The Musical this weekend, November 11th, 12th and 13th. Tiny Rhino

We came across this very interesting sounding event the other day. We hadn't been to the Brooklyn Lyceum in a while and were wondering what's going on there. For those of you who don't know what the Brooklyn Lyceum is you may have passed it before. It's the building on 4th Avenue between Union and President that stands out more than any other building in the area. It's been around since 1910, when it opened as a bath house, and now it hosts events from art shows, to plays, to craft fairs. It's a really cool place and you should check it out if you haven't already.

Anyways, the event that we saw on the website that really stood out is called Tiny Rhino. It's a series of plays, six in total, with five dramatic elements. And here's the interesting part. Whenever one of the five elements show up throughout the six plays the audience has to take a sip of their beer. Yes, it's a drinking game! Now the bit that made us really intrigued and actually want to attend was this little blurb we spotted on their website. "Leave the mindless boozing to the frat boys - we're artists and therefore sadists by definition. Fair warning: these plays will venture down a darker path than your average drinking game."

So, if this sounds like a fun thing to do on a Monday night, join them November 14th or December 12th at 8PM, pay $10 at the door and sip away!

Art and Cake!

The Kentler International Drawing Space, located at 353 Van Brunt Street, is having it's 21st birthday and you're invited. It's $15 at the door for adults and $5 for kids. So, we here about these Char 4 events all the time via email. They have a lot going on over there. We've posted about them in the past, although it's been a while, so we usually just read them but don't normally consider sharing. This last subject really caught our eyes though and we had to share. Our inbox read "Drink Turkey Win a Smoked Thanksgiving Turkey". Hmmm. Visions of some roasted turkey concoction danced through our heads for a moment but then we came to our senses. New Yoga Studio on Smith

At 229 Smith street, a pretty hard to miss awning has gone up to announce to coming of a new yoga studio. It's Prana Power Yoga and they have studio's through Massachusetts and New York. They even have a restaurant in Newton, MA. Could one be coming to Brooklyn also?

BK Swappers get your tickets!

BK Swappers will be swapping in the neighborhood yet again come November 20th. 61 local is the perfect venue for this event, which will take place between 4pm and 7pm. Not only does the "keep things local" message match up with that of the swappers, but the space itself is large with big long tables. Perfect for displaying your baked goods or other treats you brought along to swap. I'm sure the swappers are happy to be back there. As you may already know, or may not, the event is free but you have to get tickets and they go quickly. In fact, all the spots are already gone. So why am I blogging about this you ask? Well I noticed that the waiting list is still open and saw this footnote on eventbrite. If you've got kids one thing you'll need to think about after all those sugary treats they consumed this weekend and yesterday (and probably days and days to come) is getting them to a dentist. If you don't already have a family or pediatric dentist you may want to look into this new pediatric dentist we spotted a few months ago located in Brooklyn Heights. The office is beautiful, they have a playroom as well as a waiting area and the treatment rooms don't look like your normal sterile and scary dental rooms. They are colorful and kid-friendly. Their approach seems just as welcoming as the atmosphere. Here's a quote from their website.

Ok, we thought we'd fit in one more Halloween event before the holiday of all holidays is only a faint memory hidden within the headache of one major candy crash. Our other events we posted about were mostly on Friday and Sunday but this one is today, between 4pm and 7pm! Celebrating Halloween on Halloween?! How novel! BAMboo is a free event located in front of BAM (Lafeyette between Ashland Pl and St Felix St) and features live music, roaming entertainers, a puppet show, games, costume contests and candy giveaways! Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill are amazing places to go trick or treating today, but if you wanted to change it up but weren't sure how, BAMboo is a great option to check out. If anyone decides to fore-go the Cobble Hill Park Parade and venture out to Ft. Greene, let us know how it was!

Pok Pok comes to Columbia Street

Leases have been signed and we could not be more excited that Pok Pok is coming to the Columbia Waterfront and taking over the old 5Burro space. It is a great addition to the already thriving area! We can not wait to eat some wings in their backyard!

Halloween is coming!!! Part 4

Our last blog about Halloween events is here and we have a very kid-friendly event that sounds like a lot of fun. It's the Families First Halloween Party (250 Baltic Street) and it's on Sunday, October 30th from 9:30AM-12:30 pm, so if you went to a spooky late-night party the night before this one is not for you. For all you other folks who don't have the luxury of sleeping in because your alarm clock, which is one or more children jumping on you, will be going off well before this party starts, it should be a fun time. $10 per family or $8 for members will get you in. And once you're there you and the kids can partake in pumpkin decorating, halloween-themed crafts, on-the-spot photos of your costumed child (which you can take home for $10). The rest of this week will be dedicated to the best holiday of the year. Halloween!!! We've got the scoop on events you could attend this weekend that are all happening in and around the neighborhood. We all know about the parade at Cobble Hill Park on Halloween day but there are some more obscure events, and some for adults, that are going on as well.

First up, Grow NYC's Costume Swap This Friday, October 28th, between 3pm and 6pm at 69 9th street in Gowanus. This is exactly what it sounds like. A swap. Bring your gently used costumes and accessories to donate or swap. A great way to save money this year and recycle costumes as well. There will also be games, movies, music, face painting, and a haunted house (all spooky of course but also family-friendly).

Next we have the Halloween HIV Awareness Party: An HIV testing event for young adults (18-24), hosted by Red Hook Initiative. With live DJ spinning new music and classics. Give-aways and prizes. 767 Hicks St, Fri, Oct 28. Free.

Buschenschank Brooklyn

The corner of Sackett and Court has been boarded up for a while now. The space used to be an Area Yoga and there had been a sign saying that it would remain at that space. We assumed a renovation was going on but it did seem like it was taking quite a while. Waling by recently, though, we noticed a new sign. This sign was very hard to see since it was above the wood panels attached to the second floor of the building. The sign says Buschenschank Brooklyn. We did a little research and found out that the new tenant, James McGown (owner of South Brooklyn Pizza), will be opening a northern Italian tavern at this spot very soon. They will serve Italian and German wine and beer as well as a mixture of snacks, including cured meats and sausages. As you can tell from the name, although it is a traditional nothern Italian wine tavern it is heavily influenced by German culture. This doesn't stop with the live music they'll be featuring, which will focus mainly on German pop and rock bands. Can't wait to check it out. We'll get pics of the inside as soon as we can sneak a peek!

Soup's On!

A very unlikely thing to have a festival for it would seem, but with the weather getting chilly, soup is on our minds and will be in our bellies tomorrow, October 23rd, for the Smith Street Soup Festival. The fest, on Smith St between Atlantic and Carroll, begins at 1pm and ends and 4pm. For $5, or $10 per family unit, you can get a ticket to sample 20 different soups given out along Smith. Proceeds go to benefit the South Brooklyn LDC and the High School for International Studies’ Culinary Arts Program. So why soup? As read in the Brooklyn Paper the director of the South Brooklyn Local Development Corporation, Bette Stoltz, was inspired by similar soup festivals that take place in the French countryside and had this to say. “Why not do it here? It’s the season for soup and its something that everybody likes, but for some reason it doesn’t get the respect it deserves. This is just making soup the star of show.” That's true. When we first heard about this festival we were like "soup festival" but after thinking about it for a moment we got excited to walk around in the chilly fall air and sample all the different soups restaurants, like Seersucker, Lunetta, and Bar Tabac, have to offer. Bring on the soup!

New Boutique on Court

Formerly N.C.H. Studio, the space at 201 Court Street has reopened as Pink Pepper, a woman's clothing and accessory boutique. It's very nicely designed both inside and out. The inside is fairly simple aside from elegant chandeliers that adorn the store. It's classic and feminine, which is a a good way to describe the merchandise. As described by shop owner, Nicky, the high quality European and American-made clothing is for the working woman and the casual woman but it all has just a touch of sexy in it. In other words Pink is for sweet and Pepper is for spice. Along with the casual wear and work wear they have a dressier selection and a small section of accessories and shoes. Wine Tasting this Friday.

Dry Dock wine and spirits, 424 Van Brunt Street, has been offering free wine tastings on Fridays (between 5:30 and 8:30pm) and Saturdays (between 4pm and 7pm). They have an especially interesting tasting going on this Friday. Wine in a box. Great for parties but does it taste good? Find out by partaking in this tasting of two Italian wines (duca pinot noir/merlot blend and chardonnay/durello blend) both come in 3 litre boxes. The Saturday tasting will be more traditional. According to their website you can "taste some gorgeous, gutsy and classic French provincial beauties. Claire will be sharing some of France’s best from Ibanez Pleven’s offerings today". It's cider week here in New York and several bars and restaurants throughout Brooklyn are participating. Here's a quick tutorial. The type of cider we're talking about here is not plain old spiced up apple juice, like the stuff you get when you go apple picking. And it's not beer. Cider actually means "fermented apple juice". A very interesting meeting presented by the Cobble Hill Association will take place tonight. The subject is finding out the history of your home. This is a fascinating topic for home owners and history buffs alike. Plus it's free and everyone is welcome! The meeting is tonight at 7:30 PM at the Long Island College Hospital Conference Room A (enter at main entrance 339 Hicks and Atlantic). Professional historian Francis Morrone will head this discussion and talk you through the steps you need to take for basic building research. She will talk about the changes that have occurred by adding the internet into the mix as well as the importance of consulting physical archives in addition to web-based research. So, whether you own your apartment or home, or are just curious about the history of Brooklyn buildings, this meeting should be fun and informative and if you haven't got anything planned for tonight you should head down there!

The friends of Red Hook Recreation Center are encouraging residents of the community to come support their local parks tomorrow, October 15th between 10Am and 2Pm. It's My Park Day has proven successful in the past, the last clean-up effort took place on October 7th, but there's still plenty to do and they'd love to have all hands on deck. Painting, cleaning, and gardening are just a few things they need help with. It's really fulfilling to be able to help out and beautify your local parks by putting your hands in the earth or picking up a paint brush, and to sweeten the deal the weather is looking pretty good so far. So come on out and pitch in. While you are there, 155 Bay Street, you are encouraged to check out the Rec Center facilities and programs!

Try Something New Saturday!

There are so many classes and activities in the neighborhood for both adults and children it's hard to know which ones to try out. Wouldn't it be nice to have a sampling of some of your options and then you can pick and choose which ones best fit? Well, the Carroll Gardens Library, 396 Clinton Street, is hosting just that event this Saturday. It's called "Try Something New". With mini lessons and demonstrations you should have no trouble finding a class or activity you or your kids would want to continue. From yoga to acting workshops to language studies there will be a variety of choices, over a dozen. Come early, at 10:30AM if you'd like to watch a storytime prior to the event, which will begin at 11:30AM. Events at the library are free, as usual, so all you need to bring is yourself and an open mind!

Red Hook Film Fest This Weekend

The 5th annual Red Hook Film Festival will be happening this Saturday and Sunday October 15th and 16th at the BWAC screening room, 499 Van Brunt. Get there between 1pm and 6pm to enjoy this free event! They'll be showing shorts, most around 5 or 6 minutes long, with a mixture of documentary, experimental, narrative and fictional films. This new online hosiery store has some really cool and unique stockings, leggings and tights. We are partial to the polka dots! Super cute. As is the name, Peek Brooklyn. Hosiery can be a hard-to-find item sometimes, especially if you're looking for something specific. So, it's great to have such a variety and even better that you can peruse the inventory with just a few clicks. And it's a local business! The Flying Lobster is Open!

The space at 144 Union Street, formerly known as The Coffee Den, has recently reopened as a wine bar and is owned by neighboring restaurant, Petite Crevette, owner Neil Ganic. The spot is dimly lit, has dark red walls, and gives off a very romantic yet sinister (in a seductive kind of way) vibe. Perfect for getting out of the coming cold weather and sipping on a glass of deep red wine. It'll definitely be a great place to send people while they wait for a table at it's sister restaurant. If you've ever been to or strolled past Petite Crevette during their peek hours then you know how busy they can get. As far as the name goes, The Flying Lobster, well their is a funny story behind that which is best summed up below with this excerpt from offthepresses.com:

The wine bar's curious name is a joking reference to an incident involving Ganic which received a great deal of publicity in 2009. As the story goes, a couple at Le Petite Crevette sent back their lobster, complaining about how it had been cooked. Ganic reportedly responded to this affront to his cooking by bringing a fresh lobster to the diners' table, asking them, "You think my fish is not fresh? Look how fresh this is!" Some accounts had him throwing the crustacean on the table. Thus: The Flying Lobster. So, I guess the man has a sense of humor about himself.

The school system in New York, specifically finding and applying to middle and high schools, is a little tricky. Luckily their are organizations, like Insideschools, that can help. They are having a discussion at the Carroll Gardens Library next Tuesday, October 11th, from 6pm-8pm (6-7 will be about middle schools and 7-8 will be high schools). It's free, of course, and you can ask all the questions you've had about getting your child into the school that best fits them as well as any queries about the application process. Insideschools managing editor, Pam Wheaton, will be their to lead the talk and answer your questions. The library is located at 396 Clinton (at the corner of Union Street). Dekalb Market Growing

Dekalb Market is adding new vendors, as well as more shipping containers, for this fall. Sounds like they are more than doubling what they have right now. If you've never been to this market you should check it out. It's an indoor/outdoor market with local vendors selling food, crafts, clothes, etc. And now it's expanding. Cinema Rush

There may be more people filling the theaters at Cobble Hill Cinemas for the next few months. These people got a great deal too. They paid $15 on Groupon for 2 tickets, 2 popcorns and 2 sodas. How many people bought this deal? A whopping 7100! Great business for this historic theater that's been around since the 60's. Unfortunately, the deal has ended but this isn't the first time Cobble Hill Cinemas has had a Groupon deal so we're sure it won't be the last. Next time we catch it in time we'll post about it and you too can enjoy a deeply discounted cinematic experience.

Spotlight on Drawing!

We've already blogged about the Red Hook Fall Flea earlier this week but now we wanted to spotlight one of the kids activities we heard about going on there. K.I.D.S, which stands for Kentler International Drawing Space, has a free art education program for children and their parents on weekends. They will be at the flea on Sunday to present Drawing Together between 11 and 12:30. The organization, located at 353 Van Brunt, has been around for a while and if you'd like to learn more about it check out their website. Here's a bit more on what you can expect for Sunday's activities with them.

Kentler International Drawing Space and K.I.D.S. Art Education invite children and their adults to draw BIG and COLORFUL using handmade stencils. The workshop will be led by Teaching artist MEGHAN KEANE.

Battersby coming to Smith Street

Two great chefs, Joseph Ogrodnek, who has been a sous-chef at Gramercy Tavern and Jean-Georges Vongerichten's The Mark, and Walker Stern, former chef of The Vanderbilt and sous-chef at Eighty One, are opening a restaurant on Smith street next month! They will be taking over the space that used to be Patois at 255 Smith Street. Not only are these chefs very experienced and amazing, they are also friends! So, please show your support and hit their new restaurant, Battersby, which will have a contemporary American menu. Here's a blurb from Zagat to entice you further.

Ogrodnek says they're aiming for a "tightly focused, constantly changing" contemporary American menu with the same quality you'd find at Manhattan's best, but "more approachable" and served in a more modest setting. Upping the ante, he and Stern will be the only two people cooking. Top Three Egg Creams!

As we all know egg creams, a combo of milk, traditionally chocolate syrup and seltzer, are back after being hard to find on menus for decades. These retro bevs are now featured at several restaurants in and around our hood. Here are the picks for top 3!

#1 Henry Public- The perfect combo of especially creamy milk, chocolate syrup, and seltzer spritzed from an antique seltzer bottle for an ultimate old-timey effect. Not too bubbly, not too milky. Just delicious!

#2 Farmacy- This egg cream wins as much for taste as it does for ambiance. The place is warm, homey, and takes you to an era we can only dream about (or pretend we live in for the 20 minutes or so we're in there enjoying this beverage). Ask about the different flavors too, such as vanilla and coffee!

#3 Fort Defiance- Featured as a top egg cream in Brooklyntheborough.com's best of the borough egg cream contest this is definitely a choice egg cream. The one we had was not as chocolatey as the other two but the milk and seltzer were right on.

Red Hook Fall Flea

This weekend, Sunday the 25th from 10am-5pm to be precise, come down to the Red Hook Fall Flea at the PS 15 playground at Van Brunt Street between Sullivan and Wolcott. It should be a lot of fun and plenty to do for both adults and kids. A musical performance by Audra Rox begins at 2pm and a few kids activities throughout the day include a drawing workshop, futball class, movement class, and Zumba! You can also help out the local school, PS 15 whose PTA is sponsoring this event, by bringing classroom donations of pencils, flare pens, markers, crayons, glue sticks, tape, copy paper, liquid soap, or hand sanitizer. Check out the vintage clothing and furniture, hand crafts, local food, books and more! So, we'll see you there!

Bagel Bagel

Right on Hamilton Ave, near Summit and across from the cruise terminal, stands a new bagel cafe. It's called South Brooklyn Bagels and promises not only hot bagels but 24 hours worth of bagels. Wow! That's like a little bit of Manhattan right in our very hood. They aren't open yet, the sign outside says coming soon and the door was open this weekend so we peeked in. It looks pretty much ready for business so we expect it'll open very soon. Definitely a strange spot for a shop like this. Not a lot of foot traffic but great for folks who live in the Columbia Waterfront District as we can't think of any bagel shops in the area. Also great for anyone craving a bagel at 3 in the morning!

Pan Am & Vintage Cars

Walking down Henry Street today will send you back in time. The street, specifically between Kane and Degraw, was full of vintage cars. These cars were parked there for the shooting of Pan Am, which has been shooting in the neighborhood off and on for quite a while now. The show takes place in the 1960's so I'd imagine the cars would be from that era and maybe older? In the picture above you can see a classic yellow taxi cab as well. Maybe one of the stars would be getting out of the cab because it seemed they were prepping it for more than just sitting on the curb when we walked by. It was a very cool sight to see and it looks like we'll be seeing more of that in the area the way things have been going. What can we say? We live in a picture-perfect neighborhood.

Isn't is funny how you can walk by a place over and over again and see it for the first time one day? The other day, walking down Smith Street in the early evening, the Brooklyn Bead Box was just that place for us. Peaking inside the warmly lit store one could see a table where several women were sitting and beading jewelry. It was a class. How awesome! Looking up at their sign we knew we'd seen this place before but couldn't really recall and it was like seeing it for the first time, or at least in a different light. It seemed like such a nice thing to do on a Sunday evening. Sit and bead. If this sounds like a nice thing to you also you should check out their website for the class schedule. It looks like you sign up for daily classes, which are $35 or $40, and then buy the beads you want to work with, make your jewelry, and bring it home!

At 227 Smith Street in Carroll Gardens an old spot has become a new spot, all with the change of a name and sign. BeQu Juice bar is now called Mandy's Healthy Cafe. We're not sure if this indicates that business hasn't been doing well. Maybe they just needed a fresh look and name? BeQu didn't make much sense. It stood for "better quality" but that wasn't apparent by first or even second glance. We can't find a menu for Mandy's. The BeQu menu is still up on menupages. I guess we'll find out more soon.

Young Actors Workshop

The fall session for the Young Actors Workshop is coming up (the week of September 19th). This 13 week session will cost you $325 but according to their website "Scholarships are available for students in need who have a passion for acting and theater." The classes teach improvisation, scene study, and comedy & tragedy. They have different classes for different ages. These workshops are held at Christ Church in Cobble Hill, 326 Clinton Street. Ezra Barnes is a teacher, actor, and director. He has performed Off-Broadway with the Mint and Pearl Theater Companies, with numerous regional theaters and been featured on Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, Bored to Death, As the World Turns, and in the feature films Joshua and Once More With Feeling. A Shakespearean expert, he founded Connecticut’s Shakespeare on the Sound, considered one of the premier outdoor classical theaters in the area, and served as its Artistic Director for 14 years. Columbia Street Waterfront Festival

This Saturday, September 10th, come one down to Columbia Street for a day of food, rides, games, live music and shopping! There will also be a special appearance by the North Shore Animal League mobile pet adoption trailer. The festival starts at 11 am and goes until 6pm and stretches from Degraw to Union on Columbia Street and around the corner on Union to Hicks Street. The weather forecast is looking lovely so let's keep our fingers crossed. If you want to enjoy local food and music or if you're looking to adopt a furry friend head to the waterfront this Saturday. Moo Burger...coming finally?

We reported the coming of Moo Burger to 240 Court street quite some time ago, back in January to be precise. We believed the sign that said "coming soon" and so we blogged that they'd be hopefully opening soon after but weren't sure of a date. Considering, though, that the restaurant that occupied the space previously had a fire, it makes sense that it might take months to get the place up and running. Well, we are pleased to announce that the spot will breathe live again soon. They have a Moo Burger awning in place and, after peeking inside beyond the papered windows, we could see that they look pretty set to go. So the "coming soon" sign now has some validity.

Another TV show shooting

On Degraw and Henry street in Carroll Gardens the TV show "Over/Under", which is still listed as in development, will be shooting according to this sign we saw posted. The shoot date is listed as Wednesday, tomorrow, between 6am and 11pm. We couldn't find out much info on this show on IMDB but we did find a synopsis on tv.com and it's as follows. "A day trader is fired from his job due to his serious gambling problem that has cost his company millions of dollars. He moves to a new neighborhood with his wife and finds a surprising new path that will help him rebuild his life." What the "surprising new path" is is anyone's guess but maybe if you catch them shooting a scene or two you can find out.

Did you know that the Prime Meats and Frankies Sputino owners, or the two Franks (Frank Falcinelli and Frank Castronovo), also have a catering and event company? We've known that Frankies has had an event space in the back of the restaurant, a beautiful room for large parties which is actually a converted blacksmith's stable, but we didn't know they had officially become caterers as well.
