Carlos Menchaca Kicks Off 'Get Out the Vote' in our Office!

Our office in Red Hook, 351 Van Brunt, is going to be campaign headquarters for City Council candidate Carlos Menchaca for the next 7 days.  We are so happy to be a part of this campaign and to be able to help in some way.  Read more about Menchaca, our involvement with his past works (plus a very nice accolade!!), and what to expect at our Red Hook office over the next week in the press release below!
Public servant and City Council candidate Carlos Menchaca will open a ‘Get Out the Vote’ office in Red Hook to kick off the last week of his campaign. “It gives me great pleasure to be opening up a GET OUT THE VOTE campaign office in Red Hook, Brooklyn today. It was in this neighborhood, on these same streets where I was first inspired to run for City Council. The Realty Collective office space at 351 Van Brunt was instrumental in our general emergency operation post-Sandy. The leadership of Victoria Hagman, Carolina Salguero and others who ran the communications and general information hub out of this space for the community was tremendous!” During the next seven days, the office will serve as headquarters for the campaign’s effort to target Brooklynites who believe in active and vocal representation for their neighborhoods, and ensure they get to the polls on Primary Day. Menchaca will deliver remarks, and there will be opportunities for photo and video.

Sandy Survivor Get Together.

Calling all Sandy survivors!  Come join us this Sunday, April 28th, to reconnect and eat cake! It'll be almost 6 months since Sandy hit us and brought both havoc and a spirit of togetherness and strength to our community.  We'd love to see you all there! You can read the flyer below for more info.

Red Hook Sandy Survivor Get Together
Sunday 4/28/13 4‐7pm (but we’ll stay longer if you are there)
351 Van Brunt

April 29 will be the six month anniversary of hurricane Sandy. Many people in Red Hook talk about re‐finding that spirit of connectedness that supported us during the dark nights and muddy days after the storm.

PortSide NewYork and Realty Collective, the non‐profit organization and real estate brokerage which teamed up to create the Sandy aid center at 351 Van Brunt Street, are opening the doors again to bring people together. Here is our invitation to you. Please pass the word:

Dear Neighbor:

We are coming up on 6 months since Hurricane Sandy put Red Hook under 4 feet of water or more in some cases.

There was a great community spirit in the days after the storm when everyone was working together to recover. We are hosting an informal open house to hear how you are doing, reconnect and celebrate the resilience of Red Hook. It would be so great to see our friends and neighbors and reconnect.

Free cake, coffee and other beverages. We are looking to arrange some other food by event time.

Yours truly,
Your neighbors and friends at 351 Van Brunt Street

Home and Business Rebuild Meeting Tonight!

There will be a meeting tonight at 6:30pm at our Red Hook space on Van Brunt Street.  Architect Jim Garrison will be sharing resources on rebuilding efforts tonight with local home and business owners. Of course we'll be there.  He will help explain some of the more arcane FEMA guidelines, and advise regarding updated mechanical systems that are less expensive and less flood-prone.  This will be an essential info session for people who are looking into grants and loans to get their buildings back running again. So, come on down to 351 Van Brunt tonight.

Will Houdini Escape Brooklyn?

There is a very cool exhibition coming to Gallery Brooklyn, one of the newer additions to Red Hook ever growing art scene at 351 Van Brunt. It's called "Houdini" and it's a monthly traveling exhibition by BrĂ¡ulio Amado. For the past year it's already travled to cities throughout the US and overseas and on August 25th, until September 16th, it'll be in Brooklyn. The show itself is best described by this excerpt from the gallery's website.

Inspired by the greatest magician that ever lived, the series alludes to abstract universes and fantasies, exploring mind tricks and the possibilities of the impossible. The pieces invoke the unexpected and draw from raging sounds, like those of the Melvin’s Houdini record. Expect weird stuff.
