Smorgasburg is here!

Smorgasburg, which as you may be able to tell from the name originated in Williamsburg, has been slowly making it's way towards us.  They had expanded to DUMBO and starting this weekend, October 6th, they'll be at Pier 5!  You'll have about a month and a half to take advantage of this deliciousness every Sunday between 11am and 6pm.  The great part about this location, something  that the others lacked, is a lot of seating.  They have dozens of long benches at Pier 5, as you can see below, with shade and beautiful views!

Brooklyn Industries Sample Sale.

This is actually a really good sale, so we thought we should share it with you folks.  The Brooklyn Industries DUMBO store is having a sample sale today and tomorrow.  Items will be priced as low as...wait for it...ten bucks! The high end isn't bad either with prices reaching only $40.  So, if you are in need of some duds head over to 70 Front Street.

Brooklyn Bridge Park Film Series!

We blogged earlier this week about the Red Hook Flicks outdoor movie schedule and we'd like to share the Brooklyn Bridge Park "Syfy Movies with a View" schedule as well.  It's a beautiful place to watch a free outdoor movie and their line-up is equally awesome (see below).  Our favorite part is that you have a say in their final film.  The vote this year is between Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Good Will Hunting, or Lost in Translation.  Voting begins August 22nd and movies that were rained out will also be added to the list.

July 11
Ferris Bueller's Day Off

July 18
Enter the Dragon

July 25
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

August 1
8 Mile

August 8

August 15

Cute Dogs!

A little while back we blogged about the "Cutest Dog at the Dogrun" photo contest for Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy.  We thought we'd share the winners with you!  There were two different dog parks, so two different winners.  Both are pretty adorable.  "The winner at the Main Street Dog Run is Goonie and the winner at the Pier 6 Dog Run is Arrow."  Super cute.  Good names too!

DUMBO Arts Fest!

The annual DUMBO Arts Festival is coming soon.  Three days, from September 28th-30th.  This event has always been a unique and engaging experience and we highly recommended checking it out if you've never been.  And revisiting if you have!  It covers several blocks of the neighborhood and celebrates art, music and performance.  Rain or shine it's pretty awesome because they have both indoor and outdoor spectacles.  Oh and you should definitely hit some snacks while your there.  Jacques Torres ice cream cookie sandwich anyone?

Brooklyn Flea Expands.

It's been happening since June 21st but if you haven't checked this out already you should.  Why? because it's delicious and cool.  Both figuratively and literally.  Holding this "Flea Food Under the Archway" ensures both shade and a breeze from the waterfront along with the long list of awesome food vendors.  More info about the vendors and times are below.

All summer long you'll enjoy noshing on Asia Dog (Mel and Steve!), Brooklyn Oyster Party (po' boys and raw bar!), Landhaus (pork meatballs, brats!), and Mile End (smoked meat!)

Find Flea Food Under the Archway on Thursdays 11:30am-8pm, and Fridays 11:30am-4pm, through August. The Archway runs under the Manhattan Bridge between Anchorage Place and Adams Street.

Photoville: Cool but Hot

Courtesy of Rock Paper Photo via aCurator Magazine

Did anyone attend the event we blogged about called Photoville?  We went last weekend and, although the event was a great idea, it was an unfortunate weekend to have it because it was sooooooo incredibly hot.  They had delicious food vendors and the photography exhibits were wonderful.  The spot was just under the BQE in Dumbo and it was in a concrete lot, no shade, and the shipping containers seemed to be giving off heat even more.  We hope people went the weekend before when it was less sweaty.  Maybe they'll rethink doing this event in June/July if it happens again next year.

What is Photoville?

We've been seeing these signs around for something called Photoville (see above) and it piqued our curiosity.  It's a pretty cool flyer for starters.  Well we checked out their website and found out a little about this exhibit that begins this Friday, June 22nd.  It sounds like something we'd like to make sure we see....and eat and drink!
PHOTOVILLE is a new Brooklyn-based photo destination - a veritable village of freight containers transformed into temporary exhibition spaces, taking place this summer from June 22 to July 1, 2012.

Photoville will feature a feisty mix of exhibitions, lectures, hands-on workshops, nighttime projections, a photo dog run, a camera greenhouse, and a summer beer-garden with food trucks that will create a photography destination like no other.

Occupying more than 60,000 sq. feet in the heart of Brooklyn Bridge Park, Photoville will be located on the uplands of Pier 3, along the Brooklyn Waterfront between DUMBO and Atlantic Avenue.

Brooklyn Bridge Park Pool!

We'd heard about the pool opening up in Brooklyn Bridge Park this summer and were extremely excited about the prospects.  We learned more after reading a recent write-up in Time Out.  We love our neighborhood pools.  If you've never been to the Red Hook pool you should give it a try.  It's a bit of a hassle getting in (make sure you bring a lock!) but the pool itself is really big.  Brooklyn Bridge Park is such a beautiful setting, though, and even though the pool itself will be....well...cozy, the fact that you can go swimming and then hang out in the park after or before makes it all the more enticing.  Here's what we learned.   The 1,500 square foot pool is only 3.5 feet deep (great for kids!), free, and will be opening in early July on Pier 2.

Cobble Hill Inspiring Dumbo.

We've just learned from Grubstreet NY about some recent similarities between Cobble Hill and it's not too distant neighbor, Dumbo. First bit of news is that One Girl Cookies just opened their second location at 33 Main Street. This is right next to a soon-to-be a Brad McDonald run restaurant that will be serving seasonal American fare. McDonald, of Atlantic Avenue's Colonie, will also be opening a second restaurant in Dumbo at 5 Front Street. The Front street restaurant will be entirely different from the other two as it will serve Mexican fare. No need to worry, though, neighbors. We are only sharing with Dumbo not giving anything away. Brad McDonald will still be at Colonie and One Girl Cookies isn't going anywhere either. Sharing is good! Now if they'll only trade and give us a Jacques Torres Chocolate or a Vinegar Hill House!

Apparently we're not the only ones who love Smith Street

It must be Spring - the film crews have descended on Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill. So don't bother trying to park in front of our new office at 296 Smith Street this evening. They'll be filming something called N.L.P.I. (recently seen blocking traffic in DUMBO). Anyone know what film this might be? It's not Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock. So what is it?

Jaques Torres- Master of Chocolate- by Katrina Kitsis

Jacques Torres, master of chocolate, God to sugar addicts, and former pastry chef at Le Cirque has given us a new reason to cheat on our diets this summer. His long awaited Ice Cream Shop just opened yesterday next door to his DUMBO location at 66 Water St. There are twelve flavors including chocolate-banana, a caramel-rum vanilla swirl, strawberry, hazelnut with chocolate chunks, wicked hot chocolate (spiced with ancho and chipotle chiles), and four different sorbets. The shop features yummy homemade waffle cones, ice cream cookie sandwiches, or you can opt to get your scoop served on a belgian waffle with the works! Options abound! So grab a cone and walk it off at The Empire Fulton Ferry State Park across the street. I can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday!- Katrina Kitsi
